Operation Principles and Sources of Errors in Hydroacoustic Positioning Systems
In this work we give a short review of the existing underwater vehicle navigation systems. Among them acoustic systems seem to be the most beneficial for the broad range of different applications. We describe one-way and two-way principles for the signal recording. Further, we show that the navigation problem can be reduced to the problem of time of flight and acoustic velocity measurements. We show that the major challenges in the construction of an acoustic navigation system are due to water inhomogeneity in terms of a sound wave velocity, power loss, multi-ray sound propagation nature, and noise in a hydroacoustic channel.
Keywords: hydroacoustic, navigation, acoustic systems, errors of positioning
