ARCHITECTURE OF CHINESE SETTLEMENTS: TO THE PROBLEM OF CULTURAL STRATEGIES OF THE FAR-EASTERN COLONIZATION
This article has highlighted the architecture as a mode of constructing social and national self-identification. The experience of settlements, "internal colonies" and other forms of compact residence of Europeans in the Far-Eastern territories in the second half of the XIX – the early XX centuries are analyzed. The buildings constructed by European colonists in the cities of Qingdao and Tianjin (China) as well as in the Primorye (Russia) are considered. The peculiarities of Shikumen-style depending on the national (German, British, Russian) component are reveled. The author postulates the possibility to synthesize the Chinese-Slavic style by analogy with the Hindu-Gothic style which was a decoration of the British colonial policy. The traditions of Chinese wooden decoration and Russian sawed carving, multi-colored and vivid three-dimensional compositions that are common for both the Russian and the Chinese traditional architecture opened extensive possibilities for designing an aesthetic system of Russian colonialism in the Pacific region. However, this cultural strategy hasn’t developed.
